Cole Haan tries out shades of aubergine

Cole Haan has been flirting with greatness for several seasons now. Almost every collection from the brand includes at least one or two bags for which I would absolutely die, surrounded by a lot of fairly pleasing mediocrity that seems to sell quite well. The Cole Haan Jenna Leather Shoulder Bag is from the first group – I’ve seen this line in person, and this photo doesn’t do it justice.

Flap bags of this variety have gained favor over the past couple of seasons, and the change in color and texture from the main material to the trim makes this one stand out. At first I was unsure if I liked the shade variation because most of this bag’s other versions match exactly, but I’m starting to think that this is a good idea.

Bicolor bags are another important trend, and mid-priced brands tend to fail miserably at creating the same kind of color juxtaposition as their more-expensive counterparts. This attempt, though, is pretty solid – the colors relate to each other and are close enough to easily slip into an outfit, but they’re different enough that you notice. When you add in the pretty gunmetal hardware, this one is a workaday winner. Buy through Saks for $428!
