The Row Leather and Suede Doctor Bag, $4750 via Net-a-Porter

Ambition is a laudable characteristic in American culture, but when it crosses over into hubris, people’s reactions start to change from positive to negative. Although the buying public might approve of a young designer trying new things that necessitate a somewhat steep price tag, the attitude changes when the young designers in question are filthy rich former child stars and the prices are reminiscent of Hermes and other venerable, historical houses that have earned their reputations and price tags over the span of generations.

That, of course, is the story behind bags like The Row Leather and Suede Doctor Bag. With a price tag of nearly five grand and no exotic leather in sight, the line has generated as much negative chatter as positive among handbag lovers. When you put the price out of your mind, though, this bag is actually a downright lovely accessory.

The word I have from those who are familiar with the Olsen Twins’ operation at The Row is that the brand honestly does put a great deal of effort into using the finest materials and manufacturing processes, which is more than I can say for some of the mass-produced stuff on which plenty of us routinely spend thousands of dollars. On top of that, of all celebrities with clothing lines, the Olsens have definitely shown more fashion credibility and historical knowledge with Th Row than anyone else.

And they (or more accurately, their immensely skilled staff) are doing good work. I can think of plenty of established brands whose current accessories team would never attempt to pull off anything this chic or well-edited. The problem, of course, is that you can’t divorce a handbag from its price, and even for a bag I like as much as this one, I’m not sure I can abide the price tag that The Row has bestowed upon it. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $4750.

I think “elegant, rich, understated, classy and stately” when I see this bag. I think “gulp” when I see the price. But there are plenty of clothing items that command those prices too, a la Gucci, Armani, Chanel, LV, Bottega, etc. You won’t find them in my closet but I’ve seen plenty of them. It’s just hard to grasp the price of this bag knowing the Olson twins are behind it, but a beautiful design is a beautiful design. They are talented.

I agree these are crazy prices, but I also think many Hermes items are hugely overpriced also.

i agree, this bag is simplistic chic and it is freaking expensive, but just give the high street a couple of weeks/months, it will churn out something similar.
victoria beckham bags are quite similar to the row… the battle of the celeb clothing lines… hmmmm

The bag is beautiful and I would love to own it, but the price is insane. It’s the same with Victoria Beckham’s bag line. The Olsen twins used to make those silly kid movies and cloths that were inexpensive enough to be affordable to everyone. That is how they became so insanely rich and now those same people can’t afford their grown up products. It seems to me they are spoiled little girls that don’t appreciate where they their fans and don’t want to earn their place like Chanel, Hermes, ect..

I am a firm believer that you have to shell out the $$$ for accessories. The thing that I do not understand is why designers like Gucci, YSL, Valentino, Balenciaga, Celine…the list goes on from there….can product beautiful bags made of the best materials for anywhere from $1500.00 to $3000.00. (exotics more)….There is a point where the materials and craftsmanship no longer warrant the additional price.

This is the chicest bag that I have seen in a very long time. With that being said, even if money were no object, I still wouldn’t spend that much money on something from the Olsen twins especially when we all know that more than likely they didn’t design it. I’d rather have something from an established design house.
I say that the price should be more in the $1000 to 1500 range. For goodness sakes, it’s leather and suede.

What this article neglects to mention is that this bag is actually filled with diamonds.

I mean, it has to be, right?

It’s gorgeous. All of the Row stuff is gorgeous – and incredibly expensive. I don’t even go into Barneys anymore because of the tumultuous relationship that I have with the Row. On one hand I’m sighing with love for everything in sight, and then I look at the price tags, and I’m grief-stricken.

  • Rashida

The bag is stunning… but really? $5,000? They want too much for it… I could have a bunch of high quality bags for 5,000.00…

Great bag very elegant and classic. Excellent design. I wont be carrying one.
Price is PRICELESS! Not for the middle class or working ladies. Once you pay the 5K you wont have anything in your wallet to do anything to show off the bag. I guess acting on full house has really paid off for the Olsen twins.

I’m sure they’re well made, but this bag is almost as matronly as a Hermes Birkin, and with a similar price tag too.

    • Dylan

It’s less than half of what a Birkin costs (used). Definitely not a similar price tag, though it definitely is a steep one. I’d rather pay $5000 for a bag like this than a Chanel Classic Flap (which I can’t fit anything into).

just as a note and question to all ….do you feel that the row and victoria Beckham bags look a like ??? i men don’t get me wrong i love this bag its minimalistic perfection but…………….. they look like they were built by the same company and designed by the same company !!!

  • Vivian

bir and J Umm, that’s exactly what I thought when I saw this bag – very similar to a lot of the things I’ve seen from Victoria Beckham! This is a great design and I’m drawn to it, but would never pay $5,000 for a bag.
