It’s always disappointing when the handbags are the least impressive part of any collection, but with a line as inventive and exciting as Prada Spring 2011, I guess something had to get the short shrift. The collection’s shoes (which you can check out over at TalkShoes) were the best of the season thus far, but the handbags left a bit to be desired for luxury lovers.

In keeping with the trends we’ve seen in Milan so far, Prada went for bright colors and multihued designs. Most of the stripes came on a canvas background, and I’ll be interested to see if any of those bags are translated to leather for retail. In fact, if the bags had been made of leather from the outset instead of featuring so much canvas, my take on the collection would be lightyears more positive – I just can’t get excited for high-priced cotton, even though I think the aesthetic ideas are strong and interesting.

I am actually digging the stripes!

  • raw

Not bad, but prefer Fendi by far!

I love the colors and the shapes are nice – I’m really curious to see what their price point will be, though. I’ve been willing to shell out for their nylon in the past because it’s nearly indestructible, but I’m not sure if I would go for one of these in canvas if they’re at the “usual” Prada prices.

I’m torn. I want to like these bags but my brain keeps saying *meh*. If they make you shell out big bucks for them, being NON-leather, then I think my brain will win out over my heart and I will pass on owning one, if the prices are reasonable (under $800?? yeah right-for prada) then I would love to have the black & white stripe (or is that navy & white stripe) shoulder bag. I will just have to wait and see one in person.

      couldn’t agree more!
it’s a “mehh..” for me too..
and with a 4-digit canvas, double “mehh..”! (ipad)

I haven’t been so in lust over a Prada since their F/W 2007 collection – these are awsome! I’m not even a color lover, but these bags are really bold statements. I’m a notorious hater of anything blue, but that big blue bag in the top pic might just have to come home with me!

  • Hect

Again stop with the punchy rock uber pop but they do capture prada plus color plus new looks not that I love them but interesting .agree with others fend by far !!!!!!!!

  • Handbag Lover

I like some of the clutches and I like the first tote bag. Very Hot!

  • Perry

Doesn’t anybody notice that the first blue bag looks just like Mulberry’s Bayswater!!!

    • http://www.purseblog.com/ Amanda Mull

And everyone says that the Bayswater looks like a Birkin…

Personally, I don’t think any one brand owns that shape. Everyone has made their version at some point, so I’m not going to hold it against Prada. But that’s just me.

  • babe

now watch, how the others will follow!

  • louch

I really like the small box shaped bags – they appear to be leather? They look like a classic, clean Prada design. The others are lovely and colourful but depends on the price – if they are all the expected $1000+ then that is ridiculous.
Some of the closures are looking more Miu Miu – the grey and black striped bag has the little MM buttons. Brand starting to confuse itself? I know it’s all the same but it’s always been quite specific to keep them separate.

  • Nola

    I love these. Totally obsessed w #11

  • Des

Is the big blue one on the top leather? I would love it if it’s in leather

  • Nat

I absolutely love ALL of them! Original, different, good taste AND REVOLUTIONARY.
    Thats what Im talking about!!

I usually think your comments on collections are spot on, but you’ve disappointed me with your snobbery this time.
