Diane von Furstenberg Stephanie Hobo
We know, we know. We’ve written about the Diane Von Furstenberg Stephanie Hobo ad nauseum. Surely, some of you are sick of hearing about it. Too bad! We’re not sick of writing about it quite yet, particularly when they’ve just released a gorgeous silver version for fall.

Personally, I think it’s brilliant; the gold was warm and sunny for summer weather, and the combination of steely light and dark silvers that go into the fall version would look great against winter’s dark, woolen clothing. It’s bright without being inappropriate for the season, and the suede trim makes it an even better idea. This is definitely on my short list for must-have fall bags – grab it before it sells out, because it absolutely will. Buy through ShopBop for $875.

Jimmy Choo Odetta

Jul 29, 2009 / Posted in Jimmy Choo Handbags by Megs Mahoney Dusil.

We have been covering Jimmy Choo quite a bit lately on Purse Blog. Jimmy Choo was once only known for their shoes, but over time the brand has transitioned beautifully into the handbag world. They have had some ugly misses, but when they hit it, they do so beautifully with bags that continue to get attention season after season. I am on the Jimmy Choo bandwagon but I am just not sure that the Jimmy Choo Odetta is part of my train.

Jimmy Choo Odetta

Amanda covered the Jimmy Choo Odetta previously and quite liked it. I looked at that bag then and now and I am still totally undecided. I am decided on the fact that I would never buy this bag for myself, but I am undecided if I am liking it. Something about the strap detailing rubs me wrong. It looks like a Y, making some previously think it was a YSL bag. When I see it on the mannequin I begin to like it more, as I can see how the bag looks being carried. It is larger than the photo alludes and looks much better with a slouch as it is held, so that takes it up a few points. I suppose I just do not entirely get it. Care to help me hop on the train with this one or should we leave it at the station? Buy the black pebbled leather version through Net A Porter for $2095 or the ponyskin version for $3295 via Net A Porter.

Roger Vivier RV Shopping Tote

Jul 29, 2009 / Posted in Totes by Amanda Mull.

The Roger Vivier RV Shopping Tote is the perfect example of two handbag design principles that I believe to be true. First, that you don’t need to over-design in order to have an interesting bag. The lines of this tote are incredibly sleek, but the precision shows a great deal of care and thought were placed in to them. The leather-covered semi buckles that form the handle attachments are the perfect finishing touch, and the mirror the buckles that Vivier is so famous for in their shoes. It’s not overpowering, but it’s there, and it’s successful as a design element.

The second principle that this bag demonstrates is that when you have great leather to work with, you don’t need much else. Deciding to cover the hardware with the bag’s material instead of leaving it as metal was a great decision – it gives the bag a continuity that metallic hardware would somewhat diminish. The material used on this bag is amazing – it’s simultaneously matte and a bit shiny, it has a natural texture to it that hasn’t been erased in the tanning process, and the color is somewhere in a middle ground between brown and olive green. With so many basic thing’s working in the its favor, there was no need for the designer to employ any kind of gimmick to make this bag stand out. Buy through Luisa Via Roma for $2118

Jimmy Choo Metallic Mandah Hobo

Jimmy Choo Metallic Mandah HoboJimmy Choo may have just accomplished the impossible – they may have designed a beige bag that doesn’t make me feel totally blah. I guess the secret to doing that is not actually making the bag beige.

For some reason, they want us to believe that this bag is gold. Maybe the lighting is bad, but Nordstrom’s pictures are usually among the most accurate on the Internet, and on their website, the bag looks beige. Metallic beige, maybe, but beige nonetheless. In my household, the color is much reviled and derided, but on the Jimmy Choo Metallic Mandah Hobo, it works pretty well. The shimmery finish goes a long way towards banishing my boredom, and I could see this working really well as a metallic winter white. How cute would it be next to a fuzzy grey sweater? Buy through Nordstrom for $1595.

Alexander Wang Coco Duffel in Denim Leather

Alexander Wang Coco Duffel in Denim Leather

The elusive Alexander Wang Coco Duffel is making a comeback, only this time it is a ShopBop exclusive color. The black Alexander Wang Coco Duffel with gold studs is still hugely popular and now ShopBop teamed up with Alexander Wang to bring you a denim leather version.

Super soft leather with the look of denim, this Alexander Wang bag gives off a distressed leather look. The studs are silver rather than the black with gold studs. There are two hidden zip pockets and a box pleat at the side. This bag is less edgy than the black on gold, appearing a bit ‘lighter and airy’ rather than dense and edgy. Buy exclusively through ShopBop for $850.

Yves Saint Laurent Roady Hobo

Jul 28, 2009 / Posted in Hobos, Yves Saint Laurent Handbags by Amanda Mull.

Sometimes, you look at a bag and it just screams luxury. There’s no question that it’s made out of amazing materials that will last a lifetime, and it’ll be stylish for just as long as it’s wearable. You can buy it without worry that it won’t fit into your wardrobe or that you won’t find a use for it. Sometimes, a bag is just that straightforward and just that good. The Yves Saint Laurent Roady Hobo is exactly one of those bags.

Yves Saint Laurent Roady Hobo

The first thing to stop me in my tracks was the color – red with earthy brown undertones. It’s incredibly rich-looking without being ostentatious or showy in the least. Instead of screaming at you about how wonderful it is, it puts its hand on your shoulder and whispers in your ear. From there, I then noticed the subtle but important texture of the leather. Instead of being boring and smooth, it’s somewhere between a stamped exotic and a conventional pebbled leather. Like the color, it’s interesting and luxe without being unnecessarily attention-grabbing. It talks softly and carries a big stick. The refined, sleek shape is the perfect compliment – the structured handle provides a nice counterpoint to the soft, slouchy shape. The metallic hooks on the ends of the strap are the perfect finishing touch. Buy through Saks for $1395.

Lanvin Happy Mini Pop Satin Bag

Look at what we have here. This is the kind of bag that I actually find myself yearning for yet I can’t quite put my finger on why. I think it is the intricate detailing that goes into the Lanvin Happy Mini Pop Satin Bag that has lured me in. I don’t have a plethora of mustard colored items in my closet because sometimes I feel as though the color looks a bit drab. But this is definitely not the case here.

The stitch detailing throughout is gorgeous. This is a look that can be executed perfectly on a small bag like this one. Now, add the chainlink handle that is woven with grosgrain ribbon and boasts a floral crosage and this look is just perfection. And you know me, I love when handbags can be used in a variety of ways. Whether you see it right now or not, this bag is actually rather versatile. A clear favorite would be pairing the bag with one of your fancier outfits. However, I’d love to sling it over my shoulder as I wear a pair of boyfriend jeans and a white t-shirt while letting the bag speak for itself. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $1240.

Alexander McQueen Faithful Leather Tote

Jul 28, 2009 / Posted in Totes, Trends by Amanda Mull.

Alexander McQueen Faithful Leather ToteA couple of weeks ago, I wrote a rather critical review of the Derek Lam Elsa Python Clutch with which not everyone agreed. And that’s fine; opinions are like…well, nevermind what they’re like! But there’s no bag upon which everyone will agree, and that’s just the nature of the beast.

But I thought it would be an interesting exercise in criticism to find a bag that does right what that clutch does so wrong: asymmetry. And I didn’t have to look for long, because the Alexander McQueen Faithful Leather Tote is full of non-symmetrical goodness that I can definitely appreciate. This tote works better because it appears as though all the details – flaps, zippers, snaps – could serve some sort of functional purpose as well as working as a design element. The trick is to make a bag whose design springs out of the essential elements of a usable bag, and McQueen does a fantastic job of that with this tote. Everything has a purpose, and there’s no random stuff stuck on just to be cute. I’m not an enormous fan of the bag’s squarish shape, but the other elements are done very well, so I can overlook it. Can you? Buy through Net-a-Porter for $2295.

White Hot Chanel

chanel-white

The heat wave is making its way across the US and everyone continuing to bring out their summer whites. A white hot Chanel summer is the most fashionable way to integrate white. From a white J12 Watch, to Limited Edition white nail polish, to the highly loved and respected Chanel 2.55 in white patent, Chanel is bringing you every white hot item your heart desires. A white 2.55 is a dream for me, but I am rocking a white Hermes Kelly Longue this summer.

What white hot accessories are you carrying or wanting this summer?

Marc Jacobs New York Rocker Stam

Jul 27, 2009 / Posted in Marc Jacobs Handbags, Satchels by Amanda Mull.

It seems like all I had to do is complain that I was feeling a little blah about the Stam, and Marc Jacobs rose to the occasion. First we got the studded-yet-understated Marc Jacobs Stardust Stam, and now he’s brought us the not-at-all-understated Marc Jacobs New York Rocker Stam. Although I’m not sure that this sequined-n-shiny satchel is best suited to New York – in fact, I think it might be more at home in Las Vegas.

Marc Jacobs New York Rocker Stam

And I mean that in the nicest way possible – I love this bag so much that I could just drool all over it. The name of the last Stam I reviewed reminded me of Sin City, and now this; does anyone else think that maybe Marc should consider doing a glizty, glamorous Las Vegas-inspired collection? Sequins would be the perfect place to start, and I love the ones on this bag because they’re not as expected as sequin-covered bags usually are. They’re small enough that at a distance, they blend together to form a shimmery, shiny whole instead of a bag covered in sewn-on crap, and the silver, off-center, abstract pattern at the bottom gives the bag a modern edge that helps it avoid the grandma-bag pitfall of multitudinous sequins. Viva Las Vegas! Er, uh, New York! Buy through Saks for $1995.
