Gucci Crest Boule Fabric Tote

July 17th, 2009 / Posted in Gucci Handbags, Totes by Amanda Mull.

As they say, the devil is in the details. Well, in the world of high-end handbags, sometimes that’s where you can find the design as well. And it’s the details that bring me back to the Gucci Crest Boule Fabric Tote over and over again. We’ve all seen plenty of ho-hum (and some slightly more than ho-hum) canvas totes from this brand over the years; besides their signature horsebit details, it’s probably one of the things for which they’re best known. But none has been so precise and sleek as this beauty right here.

Gucci Crest Boule Fabric Tote

It’s possible that the exclusion of the Gucci signature from this tote is what makes it look so clean and sophisticated, but I think it’s more than that. The thick leather trim and handles give the bag a heft and structure that few canvas totes have, and it makes it look a lot more purposeful and expensive-looking than other bags of this variety. The one thing I can’t get behind, though, is the price – even one of the nicest canvases totes I’ve ever seen still isn’t worth almost two grand. For that kind of dosh, I’m going to need leather. Buy through Neiman Marcus for $1990.

Valentino Small Loop Hobo Shoulder Bag

I like to cuddle. Even from a young age, I’d fall asleep with a stuffed animal and would hold it tight! I didn’t really drag around a blanket, but a stuffed animal (”Bear Bear”) went with me everywhere. Long story short and many years later I still have a soft spot in my heart for things that seem smooshy and soft. Thus, you can see why I am one who continues to love soft, smooshy and downright touchable handbags. Sure, there is a time and a place for everything, but certain bags catch my eye instantly!

Valentino Small Loop Shoulder Bag

The Valentino Small Loop Hobo Shoulder Bag boasts gorgeous color as well as leather that I can’t help but wanting to touch! First of all, I love the lack of structure here. There is a fine line between lack of structure and sloppy and this bag hits the nail on the head. This bag says no nonsense and fashionable all in one swoop. Pair the bag with your newly purchased boyfriend jeans and a t-shirt or a more form fitting outfit and the bag will still stand out. Without much effort, this Valentino bag just made itself onto my “bags worth saving up for” list. Buy through Luisa Via Roma for $1385.01.

Dolce & Gabanna Miss Sicily Convertible Bag

I’ve always been a big fan of black. When I was 5, I embarrassed my parents at my kindergarten entrance interview by telling the school counselor that my favorite color was black (apparently the counselor found that a little odd for a little girl). It still ranks pretty high on my list of favorites, and I’ve enjoyed seeing all the black bags that have been coming out for fall (it’s easily the season’s most prominent trend). But sometimes it’s nice to have a palate cleanser in between courses – the juxtaposition helps you appreciate what you’re getting. And what’s a better palate cleanser for somber black leather than glossy hot pink?

Dolce & Gabanna Miss Sicily Convertible Bag

Which is exactly what the Dolce & Gabanna Miss Sicily Convertible Bag is. The structure of the bag combined with the bright color reads a bit, uh, mature to me, but it’s hard to hate on a bag that’s so relentlessly cheerful in the face of trends that are so strongly the opposite. I don’t love it and probably wouldn’t buy it or wear it, but I can appreciate it for what it is and what it’s trying to do. Buy through Saks for $1695.

Alexander McQueen Faithful Glove Clutch

Alexander McQueen Faithful Glove Clutch

When Amanda first covered this clutch I knew the opinions on it would be mixed. But I was all for the Alexander McQueen Glove Clutch and still am. It is entirely edgy, entirely different, and one of few bags that truly has me excited that I have seen on the market in a long time.

McQueen designed this bag after Marianne Faithfull who is an award-winning English singer, songwriter and actress who became known for her pop and rock music along with her struggle with drug abuse. The Alexander McQueen Faithful Glove Clutch is suited for the rockstar it is named after and her rockstar life. The glove handle is detachable, which means you can remove it and rock one leather glove in style a-la-Michael Jackson. There are two front zipped pockets and an internal zipped pocket. Net A Porter is carrying brown leather, but I still prefer the black leather version at Saks. Buy through Net A Porter for $995.

Bally Studded Top Handle

Not to be completely cliche, but lookie here – lightening has struck twice! It appears as thought something as afoot at Bally. Known for unobtrusive, somewhat bland bags for people that like beige, they seem to be barking up an entirely new tree lately. First, we covered the Bally Multi Zip Hobo, and now we’ve got the Bally Studded Top Handle. I loved the last one, and I may like this one even better. Which is odd, considering I can’t recall even noticing a Bally bag before last week.

Bally Studded Top Handle

The best decision that they made with this bag was making the rounded studs black instead of silver. That way, they look more like a texture instead of a decoration from a distance, but you still get the full effect when you’re close up. Another great move was making the studs steadily larger as they extend down the body of the bag – it adds to the idea that it’s a texture instead of just a bunch of stuck-on crap. The matte black leather accents in the side straps and handle attachments provide just enough juxtaposition to the rows of studs to tone down the look a bit and make it wearable every day. Quite possibly my favorite fall bag thus far; too bad it’s so expensive. Buy through Luisa Via Roma for $2430.

Prada Tessuto & Ricamo Tote

The first time that I scrolled past the Prada Tessuto & Ricamo Tote, I was entirely sure that it was Valentino. Partly that’s because of the difficulty of photographing the details of a bag like this, but partly (or maybe mostly), it’s because it really LOOKS like some of the Valentino bags we’ve seen recently. Incredibly intricate, shiny, flower-themed…that’s kind of their thing. And it’s really not Prada’s thing – their aesthetic is much more streamlined and modern, particularly in the bag department.

And the more I look at it, the clearer it becomes that Miuccia should have left this to her Italian compatriots. The sequins-and-nylon setup they’ve got going on here just isn’t working, not even a little. Valentino does a great job with this gimmick because there is order in the bags’ chaos; the Prada version just looks like someone dumped a bag of black sequins on it. Considering the price tag, I’d look elsewhere if you’re interested in a similar style. Buy through Saks for $3695.

Yves Saint Laurent Easy Suede Bag

Yves Saint Laurent Easy Suede Bag Yves Saint Laurent has perfected the art of suede printing bags. The duffel shape is a bit hit for fall and the simple shape of the Yves Saint Laurent Easy Suede Bag looks amazing with rich, lizard-print suede. The burgundy is a stunner and the mustard truly doesn’t look bad on the website, though I wonder what it looks like in person. If you have not felt a YSL sueded bag in person, you must! I assure you it is divine. Dimensions are 16¾”W X 12½”H X 6½”D.

Buy through Saks for $995.

Alexander McQueen Clover Medium Satchel

I love tiny, sophisticated bags that make a statement. Kind of like Alice Cullen, who is petite and graceful but packs a mean punch (that’s for you, fellow Twilight fans). That is why I was so excited when I saw the Alexander McQueen Clover Medium Satchel. Key word: medium, but my eyes glossed over that and I only saw the stock photograph, imagining how gorgeous the little bag must look in person. Then I clicked on over to the main page and I realized that this is actually quite a large bag. Oh, looks can be so deceiving. Though my hopes for the tiny, tiny bag were dashed, I came around and rather like this bag despite its size.

Alexander McQueen Clover Medium Satchel

I like the brazenness of the patent leather combined with the simple clover design, and I’m a big fan of the huge golden plate in the center. Some may think it obnoxious, but I think it makes the bag a little more alluring, mostly because your eye is just drawn to that bright spot. This McQueen works that plate much better than the Alexander McQueen Clover Hobo that we reviewed in May. Finally, I can’t resist a bag with feet, even if that bag is almost as big as I am. Buy through Zappos for $1,899.
