Spring ads are always my personal favorite, and the newly released Mulberry Spring 2012 campaign is a perfect illustration of why. If you don’t look at these photos and feel a fierce need for a floppy straw hat and a lobster roll (in addition to a new bag, of course), then you and I can’t be friends. What we have here is a bright, shining beacon of spring fashion hopefulness.

The ads, lensed by Tim Walker and featuring Frida Gustavsson and Lindsey Wixson on England’s Brighton Beach, are full of optimism and wonderment in the form of whimsically oversized ice cream cones and playful beachside shenanigans. Naturally, bags take a central role in all of the fun, with the seafoam and black snakeskin option standing out as the leader of the pack. The rest of the images can be found after the jump.

Because you so could wear those shoes on the beach, only not. Sorry, I’m all for whimsy but the shoes pulled me right out of the picture.

I absolutely adore Mulberry and think they have done a fantastic job re branding themselves as the go-to-designer for easy, carefree satchels. BUT, they need to stop making such horrid interpretations of it!!! The bags in the ad campaigns are just Alexa’s with added straps and hardware! There is no functional aspect to it and I think they need to start showing more variety because as far as bags go, its all been seen before. They have other great designs such as the stunning evelina hobo and carter camera bag. Mulberry need to get out of their “alexa-esque” rut.

That’s like attempting to tell Balenciaga to stop reinventing their motorcycle bags in different colours and shapes, or Louis Vuitton to quite the monogram canvas, or Chanel to give the flap a break, or Dior to put aside the Lady Dior, or Celine to move away from the Luggage……

Every fashion house that launches an accessory line has one statement handbag design representing the house and their design aesthetic and we recognise it immediately. All the other bags a fashion company can come out with can be anybody’s bag, but the classics will always remain distinctive.
