I’m not really one to sit and ruminate on a bag. When I see a new one, I either have something to say about it or I don’t, and if I do, it normally gets written about it shortly thereafter. Forming an opinion has never been difficult for me.

But when I saw the Michael Kors Roslyn Leather Shoulder Bag, I found myself experiencing a confusing, unfamiliar mix of feelings – I like the bag, but there’s something not quite right, and I’m having a difficult time putting my finger on it. Let’s discuss this bag’s details, shall we? After all, that’s usually where the devil is.

Michael Kors Roslyn Leather Shoulder Bag

First, I love the color and how it coordinates with the light gold hardware. This is just the kind of shade that I go looking for when it’s time to switch from winter to spring, and although that’s many months away, it’s perfect for the Resort 2010 collection that this obviously came from. On this rainy, sub-50-degrees day, I’d love to have a reason to buy this bag. A vacation to someplace balmy and exotic, preferably.

But something goes awry circa the handles. I like the knotted shoulder strap – it seems appropriate on this kind of bag where it might look cheap on something more tailored or formal. But then there’s the tote straps for hand-carrying, and they’re so plain and flat that they look like a complete afterthought. The shoulder strap isn’t so ridiculously long that you couldn’t use it to carry the bag by hand or in the crook of your arm, so why add them on anyway?

Maybe the designers tossed them in to give them someplace to hang the little dangling bits that come from the handle attachments. Are those things necessary? No. Would the bag look better without them? I can’t decide. They give some visual interest, which I think it needs, but they also appear to be a stuck-on afterthough. Maybe if they had been incorporated more centrally into the bag’s shape? At least that way, we could have done away with the unnecessary handles. Overall I still like the bag, but I wouldn’t buy it for full price – this seems like the sort of thing you pick up on sale. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $895.

At first glance i didnt notice the double handles as i was blinded by the awful aqua green colour but you are right they do look odd and without them the central bit of the bag might look a bit empty. However maybe that wouldnt have been necessarily a bad thing. Imagine a lush brown or deep purple and remove the middle extra handles. I think it could work.

Too many knots for me. Nice color though.

Beautiful color but hardware in silver might be better. Dump knots.

I think that if the shorter straps and the extra nots on the front were eliminated altogether, it would be cute. I love Michael Kors handbags, but this one is a miss for me. Color’s good.

    Knot for me! Pun intended.

  • Handbag Lover

Pretty color but that’s about it, not worth $895 at all!

Hope you are doing well today Lady! :)

I agree, too many knots. The bag looks sad, like it is crying(if this makes any sense). Like the color!!!

I wanted to see more views of the bag so I headed over to net-a-porter. The one view I wanted to see wasn’t there I wanted to see the handles lying down on the bag. I think if they gave us that extra view we all would have a better idea how this bag is supposed to look. As it stands without that view I must say the handles look too thin and unnecessary. I can see where they were going with having the handles attach to the zippers, but do the zippers open to a nice pocket for your keys and blackberry? I wish we had more info.

Love the color but hate the excessive hardware. I must admit I’m not a big fan of Michael Kors.

    CHECK IT OUT
I went to Bloomingdale’s website and found Michael Kors Roslyn Deerskin Tote this bag is very similar to the MK Roslyn Leather Shoulder. The only difference I see between the two are the thin handles. I like this tote so much better, and you get to see it in black.

    Susanna says:

It is my All Time favorite colour, for a spring Bag, but again, I agree above: TOOO
many knots! (can one take them off?) Too pricey though!

Looks like a Native American chief would own this bag…yikes!

  • Kristine

this looks *exactly* the same as an old Plinio Visona bag I purchased several years ago… right down to the hardware, dual zip front pockets, funky knotted leather handles… wow…

As far as proportion, this bag looks a bit “off” to me. I think it’s too tall. If it were shorter, and the handles on the front were removed, and the front knots were replaced with really nice gold zipper pulls, it would be much more attractive. I wouldn’t pay $895 for this one though. Personally, I’d rather spend a few hundred more and get an M.J. bag.

I agree that the handles should be removed, but I also think that the shoulder strap could be long enough for the purse to hang from the shoulder to the waist.

I just saw this photo and it reminds me of a new Chloe bag from the Fall 2011 collection (I think)
