Some of the most successful Louis Vuitton handbag lines have been the ones in which Takashi Murakami collaborated with Marc Jacobs. The Multicolore line, Cherry Blossom line, Panda, and Cerises were all the works of Japanese pop artist Murakami. The smiling cherries of the Cerises line were what initially drew me into a Louis Vuitton store, but alas I was too late and they were completely sold out. Now Murakami and Louis Vuitton have joined forces again, this time selling limited edition (rumored to be only several hundred pieces available) Louis Vuitton accessories and bags at the Takashi Murakami exhibit at the Los Angeles MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art).
The newly released pieces include the re-introduction of the Louis Vuitton ‘Hands’ symbol shown on the front of the monogram canvas Neverfull bag (available in PM, MM, and GM sizes) and Porte Monnaie Ronde. In addition, Murakami has also introduced a new character called ‘Chibi Kinoko’ which means little mushroom. This little mushroom man has been placed on the front of an agenda, which is available in the traditional monogram canvas as well as the black and white Multicolore canvas.
The bad news is that I live in Middle America (home of cows and corn) and won’t be able to make it out to LA before the items sell out. In addition, the shop will NOT do charge sends. Therefore, if you happen to live in the Los Angeles area hurry to MOCA as fast as you possibly can. But remember, there is a limit of two items per person.

I hit LA this weekend just to attend the opening of the Murakami exhibit. Loved his exhibit, and loved the LV store. I wasn’t planning to by a limited Murakami because I’m not particularly fond of the Neverfull, nor did I want a coin purse or an agenda. Not to mention, prices were jacked up about $200+ compared to regular LV prices for a Neverfull, etc. Everything changed though, as soon as I saw the hot pink canvas lining of the Neverfull. Screams Murakami, and boy did I think it was cute. One Neverfull GM later, I’m back in San Francisco, Buyer’s remorse? No. Rather, just trying to figure out when I’ll use this thing! It really is cute, though. Also, there’s a leather luggage tag attached that reads: “The Neverfull by Louis Vuitton. Murakami Edition. Special edition for Murakami, The Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles.”

I LOVE these bags. Soooo cute! Very stylish. I live in Japan so its impossible for me to get one from the store. Luckily I found this one (and others) on eBay!

I think it’s outrageous and disgusting that the museum’s board of directors accepted payola for this installation. I’m not knocking handbag design in any way. Nor am I knocking all you LV lovers out there. But there’s a time and place for everything. Please note: because this institution, which displays art as it’s main function, chose to do this – does not make the contents of the LV store within the exhibition ART – in any way shape or form, within the context of the museum. The fact that a public institution saw fit to ‘legitimize’ or place the work along this cultural axis is only testament to their lack of integrity. I can’t even find the words to describe my ire about the fact that a PUBLIC institution sees fit to tow the corporate line in this way.

I am very surprised the LV lovers are swooning over this bag. And I am astonished that LV and Marc Jacobs let their names be associated with it. The monogram and stencil are “cute”. However, the quality of materials and workmanship are atrocious and not worth $860. The leather used is of very low quality and very cheap feeling and looking; ultra thin. The zipper closure is sub-standard. This purse would not stand up to other purses within the LV store. The purse is sold flat like a paperbag. Therefore, when you get it home it has a folded crease in it. Everyone knows that purses of any quality are sold with a cotton bag for storage and with paper stuffing to maintain its shape. Don’t waste your $$$. Go to the LV store and by a genuine article if you really need one.
hmm. the bag is sold @ all LV stores for $100 less but they are not pink inside and the lovely Murakami didn’t help design it. I use my bag every and love it. Sorry you got a bad reaction on your purse. Mine is never full since I can hold so much goodies in it

The color of the “Hands” are different on the fake ones. Inside too. Printing of the words are different too. I did a lot of research on the web and I have a real one I got from MOCA.
