Between London’s first-ever dedicated men’s fashion week and Pitti Uomo in Firenze, menswear has been all over the fashion radar this month. In keeping with current trends in the category, the London and Pitti shows were full of prints, patterns and generalized male fashion insanity. It’s great to see dudes who are interested in fashion finally have more options that cater to a wider variety of aesthetic preferences, but the pictures coming out of Europe have been so nuts at times that I feel like I need a bit of menswear palate cleanser. That’s where the Lanvin Grained Leather Messenger Bag, this week’s Man Bag Monday pick, comes in.
Over at TalkShoes, I write regularly about how Lanvin’s great strength is its restraint. Not that the line is known for minimalism, of course, but that Alber Elbaz and the design team almost always seem to know exactly where to stop futzing with a piece’s details, no matter how intricate or pared down the particular piece might be. The bag is definitely the latter – made entirely out of medium grey textured leather and with strap bales as the only visible hardware, this bag might speak softly, but it carries a big stick. Just look at those angles.
The way the leather pieces are pieced together makes the design unique but not off-putting to those who want to do modern men’s style in a more restrained way, and for those guys, grey might be the perfect color for a staple bag. It goes with black, navy, tan, brown, everything. And it’s Lanvin, dudes. That’s a no-brainer. Buy through Neiman Marcus for $1595.
