By now, we’re all aware that Louis Vuitton is in the middle of a massive re-brand, with a new creative director in Nicolas Ghesquiere and a renewed emphasis on discretion and craftsmanship instead of the ubiquity and showmanship that characterized Marc Jacobs’ tenure at the French powerhouse. (It’s important to note, though, that Jacobs’ tactics turned record profits for Vuitton for much of his decade-plus stay.) In order to play up its signatures without using its monogram, the brand has debuted Louis Vuitton Damier Couleurs for Spring 2014.
The first run of four bags, which includes two clutches, a shoulder bag and a tote, are streamlined, simple and come in up to seven colors ranging from grey to chartreuse. They’re recognizably Vuitton because of the check print, but they’re different enough not to fit into the brand’s brown ubiquity. This LV’s first Damier expansion for women since the introduction of the wildly popular Damier Azur nearly ten years ago, which has clearly demonstrated for years that there’s significant market interest in the print beyond just its original colorway.
