Introducing Handbags by Camila Alves

Aug 13, 2008 / Posted in Introducing... by Shannon Mahoney.

I’m going to be honest here, I don’t think I ever heard the name Camila Alves until she started dating Matthew McConaughey. So, when Megs recently mentioned that Alves has her own line of handbags, I was instantly intrigued. Thankfully, the internet makes information gathering so easy (really, what would we do with out it?!?!?!) that within a couple searches, I found out quite a bit. Of course, I looked at the handbags as soon as I finished admiring the many Matthew McConaughey images. Hey, can you blame me? The Muxo line, which means “Goddess of the Water”, by Alves does have a certain hippie vibe; a hippie vibe for those who can afford to drop big bucks. Honestly, I’ve been told for years that I am a tad hippie-esque, and I have to say, I find it hard to believe many of my day to day fellow hippies would drop this kind of cash for any of her bags. Even if you just like the hippie look, what do you think of her bags?

Out of the bags I looked at, the Camila Hobo (image at the top of this post) was the only one I could *maybe* see myself carrying. Of course, the material is beautiful and the detail is note-worthy. I do like the distressed croc-embossed leather with drawstring detail and topstitching. Her other bags use similar material and have a similar feel while offering different shapes, colors, designs, and details. The bags I looked at run anywhere from about $600 to over $1,000. I understand the material being used and the craftmanship drives the price up, but personally, I don’t really like any of the bags enough to buy them. But, if you have this kind of money to spend and say you want to buy the Camila Hobo, you can do so through Shopbop for $1,056.00.

I don’t like these bags. The circle bag looks like something you could pick up at the Phoenix airport right next to the souvenir bolo ties.

I feel like it would be cheaper to head to a central/southern american country in the off season and score a locally made one that these ar probably ripped off from.

Why do new designers think they can jump right into the market at such a high price point? Just because she’s dating MM doesn’t make me want her $1200 handbags, leather, hand tooled or not. I can think of A LOT of other ways to spend that money.

Why? Why? Why? I don’t know how they can charge that much for an unproven line.

The brown bag is awesome. Way expensive, but nice. I would get it if I had the money.
Listen girl you are beautiful, don’t listen to critics, some people or better yet, lots of people are mean.

Hey, its not a matter of Camila being beautiful or not. She is a young girl married to an A list guy and we need to give the girl some credit for trying to launch her bag collection. However, who on earth would pay $600 to $1000 for such an overpriced bags? Certainly not me. Believe me, in Brazil we can buy wonderful bags at hundreds of local markets, so called (camelos) and pay peanuts for them! So Camila what were you thinking? You haven’t even build up brand reputation! At least try to build brand reputation and built up some image people can associate with before even attempting to rip customers off with such an overpriced bags. Please girl have some degree of humilty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

to the prvious blogger, totally true on everything you have said, I just totally love the bags and although I can’t afford them, I can say they are beautiful. In regard to my previous comment about Camila being beautiful, she simply is. It has nothing to do with her A list man etc., she simply is. That is according to me. No one else. Hopefully, she will come up with some bags that can better be afford.
