Weekend Debate: Is Elwood the ugliest dog?

Jun 23, 2007 / Posted in In The News by Megs Mahoney Dusil.

There is actually a competition for the World’s Ugliest dog and this creature actually won it. “Elwood” is a Chinese Crested dog and dubbed the ugliest dog in the world. Do you agree, is Elwood seriously ugly? Do you think having a contest for the ugliest dog is really necessary? Do you think owners who enter their dogs are cruel?

Let’s enjoy a weekend debate!

The Chinese Crested dog ‘Elwood’ appears at the 2007 World’s Ugliest Dog Contest Friday, June 22, 2007, in Petaluma, Calif. Elwood, who weighs in at just 6 lbs and was rescued as the result of a New Jersey SPCA investigation, has won the title of World’s ugliest dog of 2007.

well i’d say Elwood is quite ugly. but i feel bad for him because it looks like he has facial deformations (for example, his tongue is all over the place and his eyes look a bit odd) so i don’t think he should qualify. poor baby

Yes, I agree – he shouldn’t be qualified as ‘ugly’, but cruelly abused. Although, perhaps winning the contest is a nice reward? Do the dogs get anything, or just the owners?

:???: You do know that most chinese crested dogs end up looking something like this. Abuse has nothing to do with it. I have a dog who has a tongue that is too big to fit in his mouth. Stuff like that just happens.

I actually seen this dog and the owner on TV and this is the way the dog has always looked. The owner says the dog has never been abused.

I’m finding him really cute in an odd way… adorable, really. I see a touch of “Gizmo” from the movie, Gremlins. Anyone remember Gizmo???

Gizmo was the cute one who never turned into a Gremlin.

Yes the owners are cruel  , and there shouldn’t be any contest like this. Can you imagine if there was such a contest as ugliest kid in the world? Would you enter your child in such an event? And even if she wins, is it actually something to be proud about? Dogs have feelings too you know. If Elwood knew what was happening, I think he much rather have died than be rescued in the first place.

    I’m sorry, I love  dogs…

You might want to consider your belief system. If anything this contest shows that you can be a winner. I love dogs too. I have three of them all rescued. The whole premise of the contest is that there is no such thing as an ugly dog. If you asked each owner if they thought their dog was ugly they would say no, their dog is cute.

Believe me Elwood is far from abused. His feet never touch the ground because his owner loves him dearly. Elwood was a rescue, living in a house with 15 other dogs and the owner was over her head. The owner prior to this one wanted to kill him based on his ugliness. There is nothing medically wrong with him and of course dogs like handbags are a personal choice. I have seen some so-called purses that cost thousands of dollars that I wouldn’t have on my shoulder.

As far as ugly kids go, visit any schoolyard in the nation and hang around long enough. You hear some of the most degrading things said to children and if anything the story of Elwood gives hope to all that do not fit into societies aesthetic demands. Elwood makes visit to hundreds of schools, hospitals and elder care places a year to bring cheer. People love him!

The contest is tongue and cheek. There are not ugly dogs just dogs that are cute or different. Most of the dogs in the contest are adopted from animal shelters. The winner gets a 1000.00 just enough to cover the travel exspense and this particular owner donates it to animal resuce or supports the other ten dogs she owns (all adopted with things wrong with them). Really the contest is about acceptance not ridicule. The owners, the judges, the audience and even the dogs have fun. It’s a hoot.

How do I know all this? I am the illustrator that is doing the art for The Everyone Loves Elwood book to be published in the fall. Elwood is cute and maybe next year the contest will be The Cutest Dog!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING SO IMFORMATIVE ABOUT ELWOOD.TODAY MY MOTHER AND SOME OF HER FRIENDS WENT TO A AWARD LUNCHIN FOR HIM.HE HAS GOT TO BE THE CUTEST DOG I HAVE EVER SEEN,HE JUST DOESNT PHOTOGRAPH WELL”LOL”.I THINK THAT ELWOODS OWNERS SHOULD BE PROUD OF THEIRSELVES AND THEIR DOG.PEOPLE WHO ARE AGAINST THE UGLY DOG CONTEST ARE JUST SILLY  IF EVERYBODY CARED ABOUT THEIR PETS THE WAY ELWOOD IS CARED ABOUT MAYBE OUR ANIMAL SHELTERS WOULDNT BE SO FULL!I LOVE DOGS AND I AM NOT ASHAMED TO SAY I HAVE TWO VERRY CUTE UGLY DOGS…THANK YOU FOR BEING YOU ELWOOD ,HOPE YOU WIN AGAIN NEXT YEAR.

Yes I do agree that dogs should not be entered in this kind of contest. I think that something is wrong with that dog. Most dogs have mmore hair than that unless they are bred differently! I’ve heard plenty about that dog on the news and on the radio. I think that the owner shouldn’t have been brought out into the public like that. I wonder if someone just saw the dog and said “Hey that is a really ugly dog!

I don’t think he’s ugly at all, he looks wise to me (think Yoda).

It is cruel to have such a competition.

  8. Roxana says:

He is actually not as ugly as the previous ugliest dog in the world, sam (samugliestdog.com).
I can imagine that some people think it’s cruel. I think however, it is a funny and positive twist on the usual ‘horror’reactions these people get with their dogs. I think the owners quite love their little monsters and this way they can at least say he won a competition to all the negative people he encounters..

They are indeed cute in an odd way.. (probably the underdog syndrom.. )

  9. Olga says:

Oh, come one, he’s too cute! This is a cruel competition indeed. Besides, how can a small dog be called ugly?

What’s the prettiest dog in the world then, what do you think? Maybe husky?

    Jun 24, 2007 6:08AM
  10. Janinevs says:

Oh come on, this is funny. These owners love their dogs and any dog that’s loved will not feel ugly even if he wins a competition. I think all dogs are cute even if they’re not pretty.

    Jun 24, 2007 10:20AM
  11. Ana says:

i don’t think its cruel. I think the owners love him and like Roxana said are just putting a positive twist on the situation. They rescued him so they obviously have a heart. He actually a $1000 for it, so don’t be too sad about it.

  12. takeoutbox says:

i think it is cruel, i mean i don’t think any parent would ever enter their kid or themselves in the “world’s ugliest” competition. i love my dog like my own child, and i would never ever enter her in a competition like this. i hope this dog is loved by the owner.
this type of competition isn’t really necessary at all.

    Jun 24, 2007 10:44AM
  13. Sharon says:

I understand where you are all coming from but I really don’t think that it is classified as abuse towards the dog perse. I have no doubt that the owners love their dog in the least.

I saw the spot on this on the CNN site. They were interviewing the owner and the dog in Central Park. The dog was getting a lot of snuggles and attention. The whole competition is not serious at all and the dog is loved and adored. There is nothing negative about it at all. The owner really loves her little pooch.

The first thing i thought when i saw it was “it’s Yoda with his tongue sticking out”. He really does look like Yoda. The reason his tongue is out it because he has no teeth on that side of his mouth.

The whole competition is very positive and all of the owners love their dogs very much. To them, the ugliness of their dogs is just another endearing quality or their beloved pups.

Ah he is sweet. If u are an animal lover all dogs seem cute no matter how weird they look. Plus he is really loved and has been rescued. Im sure he has a better life than paris hiltons pooch who has to dress up and be carried around for publicity sake.

Thank you to all the people who are concerned for Elwood’s well being. The truth is that his owner has been a caring volunteer for animal welfare issues for a very long time now. She was crazy in love with this little dog long before he was famous and I asure you she will still love him as much when the spotlight fades. It was not her idea to enter him in this contest (it took a great deal of convincing). She still does not understand how anyone can view Elwood as anything ,but the cutest thing alive.
I can honestly say that this dog receives better care than many human babies. He loves his mom and totally loves the fact that this opportunity allows him to spend more time with mom. In fact, the thing that this little fella loves the most is spending the day being the total focus of mom’s attention.
So please don’t worry about Elwood. He is in the best of care. All rescued dogs should be blessed with this type of loving family.

Just wanted to address the sincere concern with regard to Elwood’s “rockin” diamond collar. The collar was purchased from a pet specialty store in Cape May, N.J.
It is lightweight and was designed especially for small dogs of Elwood’s stature. It is not “human bling”.
Elwood actually seems very proud of the attention he gets when he wears his star outfit.
It is wonderful to see so many pet lovers out there who are concerned for animal welfare!
Thanks to every one of you for your genuine concern.
Please consider volunteering at your local animal shelter.
We need concerned individuals with kind hearts like you.

all animals are beautiful! No matter what. They are all gentle beings with feelings! I would NEVER enter my little pups into a contest like this! Would you enter your kid into this contest? Maybe they should rename it to worlds ugliest owner with ugly personality to match contest! These owners would win! Just because it is not a human doesn’t mean it’s not mean. I could understand maybe if the money was used to donate towards animal rights/ welfare but to bling it up as the ugliest dog is horrible!

This doggie is super cute! Like yoda.

  41. Erika says:

Think of it this way… This owner wanted to show off her dog because she loves him. Since the probability that he would win a ‘prettiest dog’ contest was fairly low, she entered him in this contest, and everyone knows that people like animals in general, no matter what they look like. If it is a dog, people are going to be interested and not so they can come out and pubilcly flog and humiliate the creature. They want to come to see him so they can argue that he is actually cute and that this contest is mean (publicity that is good for the dog), or they are going to come out to see who these unusual dogs are, for curiosity’s sake, not to ridicule and call them bad names with mean intent behind it. This contest may be called ‘ugliest,’ but I think it’s there to prove the point that beauty is only skin deep, it’s what’s beyond that that makes all the difference (obviously, or else there wouldn’t be so many ‘ugly is mean’ comments). I think they got exactly what they wanted, and I think in the end it sheds a little light on the subject. For those that already know that ugly is not all there is to it, you comment accordingly. For those that are superficial and get to meet the dog, they will learn something, this dog is pretty awesome, and is a wonderful ambassador for everyone/thing labeled as ‘ugly’.

Well about Elwood, He is quite… UGLY… but this is not right, I mean yes it is nice to win a contest. But not such contest of having the ugliest Dog in the world or should I say Making the Ugliest Dog in the world. Of course no dogs can be born super ugly and live for long, maybe abnormal dogs can be ugly since birth but no abnormal dog live for long right? and besides the contest is only for fun! (I guess) Just for people to Laugh on. This is just like torturing your own pet. I mean if you were a Dog, would you like to be the ugliest? and would you like to be Boasted by others? do you want to see them laughing on you? of course not. And also it is just a benefit for the owner. Maybe the dog as a winner will be feed by his owner with plenty of dog foods but can the dog food regain the beauty? No! I said this because I think that Elwood is not really Ugly in the first place and base on his looks he looks like to be tortured or something… The Owner is so Cruel! and this contest is Not Necessary… (That’s my Opinion)

I think the discussion of the contest beig cruel or not is silly. I think a comment was made “If the animal knew what was going on”… I’ll bet most, if not all the dog owners that bring their animals to this event view this as a sort of celebration of their beloved pet– An endearing act. Same as one having an endearing name for their spouse or signficant other. It may not be the most falttering, but it’s understood that it truly is meant with love. Unless we can all understand and see inside the participants, it’s not for us to decide weather or not it’s cruel for it’s truly the intentions of the owner that decide that.
