Miu Miu Distressed Leather Hobo

Miu Miu Distressed Leather HoboLadies and gentlemen, I have posted this bag for one reason and one reason only: to demonstrate a leather-finishing effect that I truly and completely despise. Other than the quasi-shiny effect, I really like the Miu Miu Distressed Leather Hobo. The shape is good, the color is interesting and uncommon, and the handle detail is a nice, subtle touch. If it wasn’t for the infuriatingly terrible finish they put on the leather, I’d be all about this one.

Why in the world do designers EVER do this? It’s somewhere in Leather Effect Purgatory between regular and patent, and it doesn’t do a bag any favors. It mostly has one of the following effects: it makes the leather look like it’s not actually leather, it makes the leather look thin, or it makes the leather look stiff. What it almost ALWAYS does is make the bag look cheap – I see a lot of PVC bags at Target with identical finishes, and whenever I see something like this, that’s always what it brings to mind. A finish like this is also pretty much a guarantee that the bag won’t be soft to the touch. There are few things that you can do to a bag that I like less than what they’ve done to this one, and it’s a really shame – it could have been a winner. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $1050.

And in such an unappealing color, too. It reminds me of HH’s Crinkle Patent. I know there are those on tpf who ADORE that… I’m just not one of them. (Sorry.)

You are absolutely right. I bought that bag last year in summer in the colour rose. After a few weeks it looked like an old damaged bag. My friends asked me what has happened to the leather. I was so disappointed and angry about that fact. Normally Miu Miu has such great adorable bags. But this one was trash actually.

This bag just looks so blah. I’m sure it looks and feels slightly better in person, but really NOT GOOD ENOUGH to escape looking like one of the many in the rows of knockoffs at Forever 21.

This treatment gives the leather the look of vinyl. Why go leather at all?! What a waste.

I adore MM but totally agree – it’s a crime to treat gorgeous leather in this way. There are other designers who also do it – as soon as I see that finish on a bag, I totally ignore it.

Completely agree, I despise that finish, it makes the bag look cheap and I would not touch it with a ten-foot pole. Same goes for the glazed-distressed leathers (current miu miu bow bags and balenciaga, sorry to fans of both), it just makes the leather look so tacky and “chapped”… like it needs a good dose of conditioner.
