Dorothy Wong Hermes Kelly Bag

Here’s Dorothy Wang, one of the stars of E! reality show Rich Kids of Beverly Hills, headed into Dan Tana’s restaurant in LA, carrying a bubblegum pink Hermes Kelly Bag and a shopping bag from Barneys. I’ve never seen the show, but my editor Amanda tells me that it’s a great hate-watch, and that Dorothy is really funny. (After checking out these fan-made memes on E!’s website, I tend to agree.) If you pay attention to our TV recap content, you’ll know that we’re all huge fans of hate-watching reality TV shows.

I did a little cyber sleuthing and found out via Dorothy’s Instagram that she was actually on her way to Dan Tana’s to help celebrate original “rich kid” Paris Hilton’s b-day! I then, of course, had to snoop around and confirm that this “kid” was actually old enough to party with Paris (as is my civic duty), and was relieved to find out that she’s actually 26! Which begs the question, at what point is one no longer considered a “rich kid?” Shouldn’t there be a happy medium between “Rich Kid” and “Real Housewife?”

PLEASE do a “the many bags of… Dorothy Wang” post! ;) You wouldn’t even have to do much research beyond a sweep of her instagram page!

    • http://www.purseblog.com/ Amanda Mull

We’re going to be doing some stuff with all the amazing bag collections of Instagram celebs – I will absolutely put her on the list for a feature!

      • Jennifer

@upcloseandstylish on instagram is literally the queen mother of birkins. Well, aside from Vicky B and Jamie Chua (@ec24m)

      • http://www.purseblog.com/ Amanda Mull

@upcloseandstylish is the first person on our list! We were just talking about her in the office yesterday.

      • louch

I guess you just ignored all the intelligent comments about not featuring these “celebs”

      • Mya

Oh PUHleeeaasseee, put a sock in it already! We are here to drool over their HANDBAGS and that bubblegum Kelly my friend, is indeed yummy! Now if you’re looking to be an over righteous commenter about values and lifestyle and whatnot, you are on the wrong blog! Handbags is what we are interested in here, regardless of who is carrying them, sheesh!

      • Guest

That may be what YOU are interested in, but personally, I agree with louch.

      • Mya

Then you are on the bleeping wrong blog. Go elsewhere!

  • ottercat

Please do not give this vapid specimen any more space on this blog. I beg of you.

    • S

      Second that.

  • S

I really wish we put more forward- thinking, powerful, intelligent women at the forefront . We have our youth looking up to shallow, unsophisticated and ignorant woman. Let’s feauture Hilary Clinton, Michelle obama, Sheryl Sandburg. At least these women have WORKED HARD for the bags they carry. Hell, I even saw Chelsea rocking a Givenchy Antigona.

    • pe.riche.

      Well said!

And “A Many Bags of…” Chelsea Clinton/Michelle Obama/Hilary Clinton would bring tears of pure joy!

    • http://www.purseblog.com/ Amanda Mull

Whenever possible, I try to choose accomplished, talented, intelligent, awesome women to feature. (I’m the assigning editor for these posts, so I pick the photo sets for Emily to write about.) However, my efforts (and Emily’s – she much prefers to write about awesome people too) are somewhat thwarted by paparazzi culture – we’re limited to who our photo agency has pictures of on any given day, and paparazzos are pragmatic in that they’ll simply follow anyone who generates sales. Often, that’s a reality star instead of a head of state.

So when I have a couple of celebrities with noteworthy bags to pick from on any given day, I’ll always pick a Mindy Kaling over a Dorothy Wang. Sometimes, though, it’s celebutantes and reality TV reachers as far as the eye can see, and then the post goes to the person with the best bag.

Hope that sheds some light on things!

      • Guest

Photographers will shoot what sells. If you ask (and are willing to pay for) a better class of people in your photos, you’ll get them.

      • http://www.purseblog.com/ Amanda Mull

As much as I wish I could personally affect that kind of change, as long as the Us Weeklies of the world are asking for these photos, that’s what everyone is going to be taking and what sites like ours, which is not celebrity-centric, are going to have to pick from.

      • M

Why can’t we just enjoy entertainment & handbags without some underlying moral intent?! This is purseblog!!

      • S

Yes it does. And I am a purseblog lover and truly enjoy the articles and pictures you guys send out. I think my strong opinion in the first post was directed more towards the “Dorthy Wangs” and the “kim Kardashians” of our day. And from a comment I had read previously, it seemed as if there weren’t even photos to gather for Dorothy Wang. You had to resort to her instagram account since shes NOT a celebrity, and she shouldn’t be.

I acknowledge that not the most influential women will be photographed wearing the last Chanel, Givenchy or Prada. But the photos are out there, and as long efforts are made at bringing these women upfront it would be great. Especially for a blog whose main readership is woman.

      • http://www.purseblog.com/ Amanda Mull

To clarify, these photos are from our agency, not her Instagram – they took pics of several people headed into Paris Hilton’s birthday party, and she had the best bag of the group. We’re looking at doing a separate set of features on people (mostly non-famous) who have gained an Instagram following for posting their enormous handbag collections, and she may fit into that group as well.

We always make an effort to feature the best combination of bags and the celebrities who are carrying them for these posts, I can promise you that. I want to celebrate great women as often as is possible. When the stars don’t align for that on a particular day, I’ll settle for a great bag.

    • Guest

Well said. I hate to see PB take the low road so often in terms of the “celebrities” they feature. Surely there are women out there who have great handbags and who are NOT trashy “reality” TV “stars” or tabloid fodder of some sort. These people would quickly disappear from the cultural landscape if blogs and magazines would STOP FEATURING THEM!

    • joe bedlocks

give her some credit she has a decent amount of class and a positive attitude, shes not a bad role model. Its not her fault shes filthy rich. Michelle Obama and Hilary Clinton are scummy people BTW

      • Trish

Decent amount of class??? The ONE episode I watched of her show she called a girl a grouper or a”bottom feeding fish.” And she spends her days taking selfies. Say what you may about Obama and Clinton, but at least they’re busting their butt fighting for woman, the unemployed and homeless.

      • joe bedlocks

Clinton stuck a cigar in the yehaw of a woman in the oval office while his wife lingered outside, he’s not fighting for anyones best interest other than his own

    • Oh Please.

people complaining about PB featuring reality celebs. buying hermes w/ daddy’s money really need to get off their high horse 5 minutes ago.

don’t lie to yourselves by saying you read PB for some form of female inspiration and that PB should focus on intelligent women to provide better role models for young ladies. are you all serious? please be joking.

we are all here to look at bags, not seek potential role models for our daughters or ourselves. if, in fact, you ARE here to read about women of intelligence, societal contribution, power, and class, then that only validates YOUR own LOW level of expectations and your lack of ability to search for/read more appropriate sources.

you should read BOOKS and legit. newspapers if you want to read about such women – don’t expect PB to show them carrying nice bags. why do you even want to see whether hillary clinton or michelle obama are carrying designer bags? if, as you say, you respect these women for what’s INSIDE their head, how they’re accessorizing should not be of concern to you.

bottom line, if you’re grumbling about seeing dorothy wang carrying a lovely kelly, deep down, you’re really just bitter you don’t have a mogul daddy/his money to purchase one. the really funny thing is that meanwhile, you think you’re more entitled to carry a kelly than dorothy wang b/c you think you’re smarter than her or work a 9-5 job. please.

      • Sunnyfields

        To oh please,

I understand and agree with what you said about finding some sort of female inspiration at PB. We’re here to look at bags hence the name of the website.

But I think sometimes we forget that social media and whatever it presents do make an effect on its audience that is hard to measure

And since when does appreciating Hilary Clinton’s (or any other “good” female personality) bag corelating to the level of respect for her/them?

And some people are not bitter. I think some people are just trying to help ease this reality show culture that we are so engaged in which unforunately is usually shallow and materialistic. I would know – I have a huge penchant for these shows lol :)

      • Sunnyfields

To add: Whether it’s PB’s intent or not, their posts influence their readers, both positive or negative, and most certainly beyond the area of handbag appreciation. And that should be part of their responsibility as writers and editors.

Amanda, you and your staff’s influence is more far reaching than you think: :)

      • S

You make an excellent point and articulated it in a way I could not. Yes, this is a handbag blog, but it’s an influential blog. Whether or not they’re trying to have a voice, they do.

      • Oh Please

what i find curious is to how women are being ‘influenced’ negatively by photos of alleged airheads/heiress celebs w/ beautiful bags.

to use dorothy wang’s post, for example, do such easily ‘influenced’ women look at dorothy wang and wish they were her or do they become dissatisfied w/ their own life b/c they don’t have the luxury item she does?

if so, the problem then is not whether PB should keep posting such photos, and if the problem is much bigger than that, as you claim, then PB not posting such photos isn’t going to solve anything…

why should self-confident women who enjoy looking at beautiful bags be deprived of PB’s posts b/c some woman out there has low self-esteem and/or is dissatisfied w/ her life (and is somehow driven to think bad things about her life by seeing such photos)….

        smh.

      • Missing the point

Uhhh I think you’re missing the point. I cannot speak to whether or not the woman posting on here are dissatisfied with their lives or have low self esteem. Or if they’re being “negatively influenced.”

But, I think the general consensus is to have purseblog mix it up. Not only do we want to see the hot bags the reality television show celebs are carrying, we’d like to see some influential woman as well.. who are actually making a difference.

Purseblog has passed the spectrum of just a small in-house blog. They have a following and are influential.. whether they realize it or not.

      • http://www.purseblog.com/ Amanda Mull

As much as we try to give you what you’re asking for, the kinds of celebrity images you’re talking about just don’t exist. I spend half an hour every morning trying to find them in the archives of one of the largest photo agencies in the world. If I were afforded the opportunity to buy photos of female CEOs, humanitarians and heads of state with great bags, I think that’d make a pretty fascinating post series.

      • Wyy so mean?

Reading some of the comments here show how mean-spirited people can be.

So if you have rich parents and you can afford to purchase extravagant bags without having made some meaningful contribution to society, you somehow become a ‘vapid specimen’ or an idiot.

Regardless of what this Dorothy Wang personality might be saying on her TV show, there’s no question that given the chance, the same women who are criticizing her for being undeserving of such wealth/fame will trade lives with dorothy wang in a heartbeat.

      • Sunnyfields

Exactly, you’re absolutely right. PB not posting will not solve THAT problem. But the fact that PB is posting these photos has a meaning of its own. It’s like giving them “airtime”, which a lot of people think is undeserved – even if it’s simply just for the bags.

Unfortunately, there are plenty of women who do get influenced by this, most especially young women and girls I would think.

I wish it was the case where everyone would be as self-confident as you describe.

  • Elizabeth Gillaspy

Please don’t promote these unimportant idiots.

  • pe.riche.

I’ve found that those who truly are rich don’t go on shows to boast or talk about it. Just sayin’.

  • Blonde_Closet

You had to check to see if she was old enough? She looks about 40, which we moderate income kids, call the Lohan effect.

  • Lilly

Love me a Kelly, not so much the color.

I can’t hate watch that show because its so boring. Anyway, wonder if Paris knew her before the show, or is she trying to ride on the coat tails of a popular reality show?

  • M

I guess whether you are rich kid or real housewife depends on whether their money comes from their parents or husband!!

  • Oh Please.

  • phul

She does look freakishly old. Is it cake makeup or premature botox injections? At 26 you should really take advantage of still being able ot look fresh-faced. =/

  • Hal Amin

To each his own. You might come here to look at bags while others come here to judge the people. Why is anyone more deserving than the other? Valid question isn’t it. But I do suspect that the person chastising does enjoy the photos to some degree. That is all.

  • SB

We are on this site, because we value a bag. That in and of itself is shallow. Anything moving forward can not be deemed deep or inspirational. It is what it is. To try to find meaning in your interpretation of an Hermes bag is just silly. By saying women who have not made some sort of significant contribution to society, but have nice things should not be featured on a site about nice things, is the equivalent of saying women who can not afford these things, don’t contribute to society. It’s silly and pointless. Once you accept that you personally have shallow views on certain things, you will be able to tolerate some of the content here that you don’t agree with.
