Everyone remembers my Alexander Wang Rocco love and letdown story. My returning this bag still haunts me a bit, as I rarely *rarely* return bags and this one held such a special place in my heart but fell short when it came to my expectations. Either way I will not ignore this bag or stop showing support for a design and idea that I love.

What I don’t love is this version of the bag. I don’t know why designers attempt to add luxury to PVC. It is like adding nice a set of $10,000 rims to a barely functional beater car.

Alexander Wang, why did you do this to a bag that we all adored? The this that I am referring to is the Alexander Wang Rocco Duffle in PVC, a small clear PVC body bag with leather accents and studded bottom. Let me give credit where credit is due: this is one of the least appalling PVC designer bags I have seen. At least the leather accents break up the PVC and at least this isn’t a super oversized bag.

But really, PVC bags on a classic design that has already made a name for itself is entirely unnecessary. And while the price comes down $300, paying over $500 for a plastic bag is absurd. Of course there is the entire discussion of who wants their handbag innards to be shown to the outside world. This discussion could just go on and on. If you like it, go for it via Alexander Wang for $525.

“It is like adding nice a set of $10,000 rims to a barely functional beater car.” You said it perfectly with this article. And your right…I wouldnt want my insides shown to the whole world….I never understood that. Unless there’s people who wants to show off their Chanel sunglasses case, gucci wallet, etc etc. which is dumb. (fb)

  • Lisa

Not a fan of PVC and even if I was, this is overpriced and ugly. (fb)

  • Stacy

I’ve never understood why this clear see-through look ever made it off the ground to begin with. Whoever said that this was a great idea should let me find ‘em and smack ‘em with this bag. lol (fb)

  • Pat

This is disappointing. Never cared for clear handbags and it’s too overpriced for a PVC bag. Thumbs down on this one. (fb)

  • Monique

How brave do you have to be to carry around a transparent purse?!? Your whole life… just out there for the entire world to see. . . and judge. . . lol (fb)

  • 19yearslater

Oh, no. I haven’t liked plastic bags since middle school and the plastic backpack that let all of my friends know that I was cool because I read CosmoGirl.

  • Lady Swi

Oh, as if Alexander. Yeah…I really want the world to see my spare tampons and all of the cash I’m carrying. I can only imagine being tailed and pointed at by a bunch of cute guys only to find out they were laughing at me or getting ready to mug me. Can I pay $500 for that, please? This purse is worse than the Patriot Act. Peace out purse scampers.

  • covertanjou

$525 for a plastic purse? No thanks. (fb)

  • Barb

I’m with just about everything that has already been said. $525 for PVC? NO way, I can go to Target and get a PVC bag for like $20. And not an ugly one on top of it all! (fb)

  • Karin bag4bag

These bags look like the clear cosmetic bags you have in your luggage at airports ! (fb)

  • Tiff Chao

I’ve never been a fan of clear bags especially not one so large. (fb)

  • Jun

The only thing I would use this bag for is cosmetics and my cosmetics bags stay at home. Then again, I wouldn’t pay $500+ for a makeup bag (fb)

  • Valentina

I love the Rocco Duffle and I’m faithful to Wang. I don’t love the transparency of the bag, but I don’t find it SO terrible, I actually see a sort of infantile side on the bag, it reminded me of the 90′s when I was in school, HA! and I like it. I don’t find it necessary for all bags to be dressy (that’s what I get from a lot of comments I’ve read), but I do agree that $500 for a plastic bag is absurd.(fb)

  • Mika

what?! a plastic for 500 bucks.. are you serious!?! (fb)

  • Leticia

I live in Brazil and over here plastic, transparent bags are meant for the beach, and for the beach only. Plus, even with the best studio pictures in the world they couldn’t convince me that this is what a PVC bag looks like in real life. In real life it gets dirty, opaque, and all in all looks like a gym bag or something you got as a gift on a Kmart supersale. (fb)

  • swags

    No. Just no.

  • New Burberry Handbags

    hi,
this type of bag is very different & uniq.i think it is easy to handle because it is light wait.black handle is looking very nice because its matching with it.its nice.

  • Merve

The problem is although i look after my bags, the insides usually take quite a battering. Im all for perfect preservation of bags and have never ever put my bag on the floor anywhere but do i really wanna be sat also worrying about what im putting in my bag and how its gonna look?? No.

    Brand destruction in 5, 4, 3,2, 1 . . . . . .BAM!

  • BLynnT

This fascination with plastic bags needs to stop… and to ask over $500 for one, give me a break! I give you credit, Megs, for trying to find some good in this one by pointing out the leather though (even though the leather element couldn’t possibly outweigh the horrible plastic. I’m so sick of seeing these bags, and they are certainly NOT luxury. (fb)

  • Julie

Great article Megs – totally agree that ANY design house who thinks PVC/clear bags are remotely functional or good value are being ridiculous. They look tacky and cheap – even if they are made by luxury brands. I just don’t get them…

  • Jane

I will never buy a transparent bag the whole point is hiding your crap in a gorgeous bag. I don’t want anyone seeing my glasses holder, chapstick, and tampons. Could you imagine the horror of someone rocking a bag and seeing a tampon in it. Yuck no thanks and for $500 dollars that is insane. I do agree that it is one of the more attractive attempts towards creating a bag out of PVC. (fb)

  • Leslie

I never got why people liked clear bags and this one is just an overpriced version of it.

  • mochababe73

I have always wanted to wear a PVC bag, but unfortunately, I can never find a handbag just totes. Having always wanted to find out where retail workers got their from, but have been too chicken to ask. I am not a fan of the Rocco, but I would wear it in this version if it were about $50.

  • marian t

just an overprice clear bag! so agree! (fb)

  • sofia nolan

    mmm….no.

  • Savannah

No thanks! $525 for plastic is going overboard. (fb)

  • Jocelyn

I don’t like the PVC. (fb)

  • yeh

hah Get the stick out of your ass. ITS A BAG FOR GOD SAKES

  • Dana

    Overpriced? Yes.

I, for one, must admit that I like it. Would I dish out the money for it? Absolutely not. Saw 2 going on eBay for $230 OBO if anyone is interested though.

  • RAYPRADA

OMG,, IF THE BAG COST THAT MUCH

There’s just something about PVC bags that strike me as super cheap looking unfortunately :( The fact that parts of it are see through don’t help either
