Do any of you guys watch Dexter? I’m utterly obsessed with it. I can’t recap it because it’s not at all fashioned-related, but if I could, I would. Also, I would marry Dexter and I wouldn’t be nearly as annoying and self-righteous as that a-hole Rita. Ahem.

I also really love the aesthetic that they have for their advertising and promotional materials – a bit minimalist, a bit comic book, a bit blood-spattered macabre – and when I saw the Giuseppe Zanotti Red Sequin Clutch, I couldn’t help but be reminded of America’s favorite serial killer.

For the uninitiated, Dexter is a killer than only kills other killers, and his day job is as a blood spatter analyst at the Miami Metro police department. The red-on-white, scattered visual that this sequin clutch creates remind me a lot of the blood spatter pictures that you see throughout the the series, although I’m sure that that probably wasn’t the inspiration for this clutch.

It’s merely a coincidence, but it makes me like this clutch a lot more than I probably would otherwise. It would be the perfect thing to wear to a Dexter-themed party, were you to have hundreds of extra dollars sitting around to spend on your themed outfit. Buy through BlueFly for $712.

Now this? THIS is how you make a unique clutch! Forget the mess of paillettes that we saw earlier this morning – the Chloe Leather Bow Clutch is head and shoulders above that bag and most others that I’ve seen lately.

First,…

Now this? THIS is how you make a unique clutch! Forget the mess of paillettes that we saw earlier this morning – the Chloe Leather Bow Clutch is head and shoulders above that bag and most others that I’ve seen lately.

First, the color. Dove grey is the perfect shade to accent the rhinestone-studded bow detail and bring out its glittering, vintage-inspired beauty. It’s hard to make a light-colored clutch look appropriate for cold weather, but this is exactly the sort of thing that I would love to pair with a sweater dress and 1940s-inspired retro coat.

And then there’s the matter of the materials used. The leather is so smooth and perfect-looking that I wouldn’t have guessed that it was actually leather on first inspection, and that’s exactly the kind of leather that needs to be used if it’s supposed to be evening-appropriate. The types of rhinestones that were chosen are also perfect for the look – they don’t look brand new and sparkly, but slightly gritty and old-looking (in a good way). The bag could pass for an exquisite vintage piece, but it looks just as appropriate on the store shelves today. Plus, when you open it, you get a great surprise – it’s lined in bright gold leather. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $1095.

Ombré is, admittedly, a really difficult thing to pull off. It has to be the correct color transition, done in the correct shades, and with the correct depth of color. I’m not sure why the good people at Miu Miu thought…

Ombré is, admittedly, a really difficult thing to pull off. It has to be the correct color transition, done in the correct shades, and with the correct depth of color. I’m not sure why the good people at Miu Miu thought that this would be a good thing to try and do with giant sequins on a tiny bag, then, but I can tell you that the Miu Miu Ombré Paillette-Embellished Clutch does not work out as well as they probably intended.

It’s not that I don’t see what they were trying to do here – I do. But on a super squat bag, three colors of sequins does not ombré make. It just makes six rows (two of each) of similarly colored paillettes. The effect is completely lost because there’s no slow and gradual transition, and the paillettes themselves are all solid-colored. If they had had an ombré effect as well, things might have gone more smoothly.

Not only that, but the paillettes look rather sloppily attached and arranged. Forming a larger overall pattern with movable objects relies pretty heavily on the ability of the designer to keep them looking neat and organized, and that doesn’t really happen here. Plus, when a sequin moves out of turn, it reflects light different than the rest and further hinders the ability of this clutch to look ombré in the least. Overall, this is not an evening bag I would actually pay money to own. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $950.

Now, look at what we have here. We’ve been covering Proenza Schouler bags for quite some time now. This is nothing new. But, I feel the need to hash out the Proenza Schouler clutch again. I was reminded of this when I came across the Proenza Schouler Patent Double Strap Clutch today. It was as if someone snapped their fingers in front of me and said, “helllloooooo, you should have written about this already, what are you waiting for?” So here I am, awakened and loving what I see. Amanda wrote about the clutch in a yellow shade a while ago, but I am loving the dark green and feel as though it deserves some more attention.

This clutch is calling out to me – no, no – more like screaming out to me. I love it. I love it so much that it hurts. Well, what hurts is that I have yet to see anyone carry it. I’ve seen nobody in my area carrying it nor have I seen a celeb carrying it. What’s the deal with that? You can see so many aspects of the ever popular Proenza Schouler PS1 on this clutch that it continues to amaze me that this clutch isn’t more widespread. I love the classic components of the larger bag that have been transposed onto the smaller one. In this case, I am all for the saying, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. Needless to say, I am a fan. Buy through LUISAVIAROMA for $1349.

In the immortal words of Carrie Bradshaw: “Hello, lover.”

I’m a complete sucker for the Alexander McQueen skull clutches. After years of handbag loving, it’s impossible to not find a line of little evening bags that find yourself drawn to over and over again. For Megs, it’s the Bottega Veneta Knot Clutches; for me, it’s McQueen’s macabre and lovely punk rock skulls.

Anglo references have always been a McQueen staple, and this isn’t the first Union Jack we’ve seen from him, but it might be the best. The red and black patent motif perfectly mixes the traditional flag with the brand’s goth-glam aesthetic and creates something distinctive – anyone else think that a industrially remixed British flag would be a really appropriate brand logo for the McQueen nation? I’d renounce my US citizenship and move there any day. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $1650.

With the onset of fall comes cooler weather and many more social occasions. Now through New Years the number of occasions to wear my little black dresses increases dramatically. Dressing for evenings out on the town require a bit of advance planning. This year my LBD du jour is from Alexander Wang. The Alexander Wang Spider lace bandage dress ($775 at Net-a-Porter) has cocktail party style wrapped up with an asymmetric shoulder and bandage style detailing. The dress is super stretchy and body hugging as well. I’m going to need to do a few extra sessions of Pilates to look great in this dress! A spectacular black clutch is required for this Alexander Wang dress.

The Michael Kors Python Bracelet Clutch (upper right, $995 at MichaelKors.com) would add a bit of golden glow and make this look really special. The cuff bracelet is a unique accent to this python clutch. The bracelet clutch a fantastic conversation opener and there is no way I can loose this bag with it attached to my wrist. From Donna Karan, the Zipped Leather Shoulder Clutch, (middle right, $895 at Net-a-Porter) is embellished with silver-tone zippers. It comes with a detachable silver-tone chain handle to convert to a shoulder bag, although I prefer it as a clutch style. I love the texture of the zippers against the grain of the black leather. From Kooba, the Mandy Clutch in Black Patent (bottom right, $201 at RevolveClothing.com) would perfectly complement the asymmetric style of the Alexander Wang dress with its asymmetric zipper accent. Lastly, Dior’s classic Lady Dior Large Clutch (bottom left, $1,090.00 at Saks.com) would add a touch of ‘charm’ to my LBD. The quilted lambskin is as soft as butter and this clutch would work nicely for daytime looks as well.

I’ve been hung up on the Emanuel Ungaro Studded Leather Clutch for over a week now. Net-a-Porter is one of my favorite sites to peruse. I love all of the amazing designer bags that the site consistently has in stock. Oh, and when I say “has in stock” I really mean tempt me to the point of Carrie Bradshaw spontaneous shopping sprees. Anyways, this clutch has got me all twisted around and I cannot decide if it is an edgy unique hit or a disastrous miss.

I’ve always resorted back to making “pro” and “con” lists when I find myself in this kind of predicament. So, I am going to do virtually the same here except it looks like my “pro” list is much shorter. I have total appreciation for the edginess that seems to ooze from this clutch. Black textured leather and brazen silver-tone stud embellishments all over the front, and just a splash on the back of the bag. The detachable chain handle shows how a bold statement can be carried from the bag through the shoulder and back. Chain detailing everywhere you look and bright fuchsia satin lining rounds out the bag.

So what do I not like? Pretty much all of it. I don’t think this is a look I can pull off, it is far too much. If you have that pushing the envelope side to you, then this could be a great addition to your closet. Oh and one more thing, it is uber expensive. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $2210.

I am constantly looking for a great black clutch. I am sure you are all too familiar with my absolute adoration for clutches. However, when I was looking in my closet over the weekend, I realized sadly enough, that I don’t have a good black clutch.

Of course my next thought was, do I need a fancy one or more of a casual one? Well, clearly the answer is I need both, but I think I’ll get more use out of a casual black clutch than a fancy one right now. Ask me again around the Holiday season and you are sure to get a different answer. So, going with the casual idea, I want to make sure it is fun and not boring.

This Tylie Malibu Runaway Clutch is just what I need. Durable yet luscious black leather and hand laid pyramid embellishments play off of one another just as I would like them too. In fact, this is one of the few bags I’ve come across that has studding that isn’t a huge contrast against the leather. Certainly the studding is noticeable, but the idea of using dark colors adds a bit of mystery and intrigue. It is great to see a rocker vibe that is different from others that try to obtain the same look. Buy through Tylie Malibu for $564.

Ever see a handbag you like, and then realize it has one thing so egregiously, terribly wrong with it that it almost makes you palpably upset? Like you were so close to finding a handbag oasis in the desert, and then it turns out that, by a single cruel twist of fate, that it was all just a mirage?

Yeah, I kind of feel like that about the Marc Jacobs Frame Wallet Sequined Purse.

This bag was so close to being the cute, 80s, glam rock evening bag that I so wanted it to be. I can almost taste it. But then it looks like someone stuck your grandmother’s mauve billfold wallet to the back of it, and it’s ruined.

Not only is it ruined, but it’s basically a bag mullet, but in reverse. The party is in the front, the business is in the back. And since that idea doesn’t work for hairstyles, I’m not sure why any designer would think that a similarly-structured bag is a good idea. Pry the wallet off the back, and I’m absolutely sold on the high-wattage sequin clutch that would be leftover. As it is, I wouldn’t touch this with a ten-foot pole. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $595.

We are a want it now society, which many designers have picked up on. BCBG and Herve Leger had part of their Spring 2010 line available for purchase the same day of the shows, which even I took advantage of. I find myself falling into the same want it now category. I saw handbags sent out on the runway that I want to see right now. Until every designer starts putting up their lines right after their models and looks briskly walk off the catwalk, pictures and reviews online will have to do.

We were invited to the Michael Kors show which we both were bummed to miss. Not only do I love his line, I have a crush on Michael Kors. Always fall in love with him on Project Runway. Anyhow, here is a fierce clutch from the Michael Kors Fall 2009 runway. While many people associate fall with muted browns, reds, and greens, Michael Kors vamps up the fall color palette with his Michael Kors Neon Patent Leather Clutch.

Available in acid yellow and neon pink, Michael Kors knows how to inject the perfect amount of color punch to your wardrobe. While your outfit may consist of more subdued hues, add a bright pop of vivid patent leather to your clutch. I adore the shape of this clutch, structured with silver hardware and a top hinge closure. The size is more spacious than I would have thought, 8″W x 5.5″H x 1.5″D. Yes, this is a trend for fall but it will transition great into spring as well. Buy through Bloomingdale’s for $595.

We first brought you news of Bird Handbags over two years ago. The ritzy hippie vibe appealed to many and we were digging the designs. The Lady was a favorite (I still wear my Lady often) and the One Night Stand Clutch followed closely behind.

Net A Porter is carrying another version of the Bird Handbags One Night Stand with a natural colored snakeskin body and brown ostrich double handles.

The clutch is chunky and large, grabbing your attention from the first look. The price of handbags from Bird Handbags seems extraordinarily high. While this clutch is oversized, the price nears $2k for a mostly python clutch. For this price, I will be setting my sights on a larger everyday bag rather than a large clutch. This is a design that is perfect for the gals that dress very LA; casual, laid back, but chic. But the price will hold me and I am sure many others back. Buy through Net A Porter for $1810.

I’m betting that most of you have heard “Run This Town,” Jay-Z’s latest single. I live in the outer reaches or the rap-saturated Atlanta radio market, and the song is almost inescapable when listening to about half of the radio presets in my car. As with most slickly produced, high-budget hip-hop, it’s also incredibly catchy and infectious.

It took a few listens before I got all the words, and when I did, I realized that Hova dropped a really odd name in one of the lyrics – Maison Martin Margiela. I don’t know how many of the average pop-rap fans will even understand who that is, or realize that it’s anyone at all, but I found it oddly impressive. MMG is hardly a household name and is not even particularly famous to those that are casually fashion-conscious, so the fact that someone conventionally famous is not only aware that his line exists but also familiar enough with it to include it in braggadocious song lyrics has had me thinking about it for a couple days. And as such, let’s talk about the Maison Martin Margiela Ruched Leather Clutch.

If you’re at all familiar with hip-hop fashion, the restraint that’s used in this clutch and Margiela’s line in general is probably surprising when you consider that it’s been added to the zeitgeist of hip-hop culture. But it’s not surprising that Jay-Z was the one to do it – he long ago transitioned from being a kid from Brooklyn’s Marcy Projects to a businessman with considerable industry clout that also happens to rap on the side, when he gets bored. So the restrained, clean lines of this clutch and Margiela’s vision fit in better with his reputation than any other rapper that I can imagine, perhaps besides fashion-addict Kanye West. Although I’m not sure that Kanye’s taste level, as they would say on Project Runway, is quite developed enough to be treading in this territory. Buy through Saks for $845.

The years post college seemed to fly by. Gone were the 5-nights-out weeks and in were the days of working during the day and going to bed at a reasonable hour. Gone were naps (sad). And for me, gone was the need of a sturdy clutch/wristlet to take to all the bars and football games. My original wristlet love was the Louis Vuitton Wapity, which I am still loving and could gush about in its size and practicality. Now I have found a clutch that I am trying to get on board with, as it does bring back my love of night-out wristlets.

The Halston Henry Suede Clutch is a grown-up version of a wristlet for a night on the town. Wristlets are perfect choices when you want both hands to be free all night. This Halston clutch is of course more grown up in its look and price. The blue suede works for fall/winter and since it is a dark color will not show wear as much.

There is a double pleat on each side and double link pewter hardware that separates the wrist handle from the body of the bag. Everything about this clutch feels grown up from my college days, which is where society tells me I should be in life right now. But on the eve of the first football game of the season, I still feel like a college kid which makes this bag less and less of an option for a gal like me. I am bringing out practical, sturdy, young, and fun bags and clutches for the start of college football season. But if you are looking for a blue sophisticated wristlet, this may be an option for you. $1395 via Net A Porter.

Are you all on Twitter? (Follow us!). If so, you will know Twitter is one of the greatest ways to see what your favorite designers, magazines, and websites are doing. One of our favorite mags and websites, Marie Claire, gave us an ‘in’ on the 9 clutches they are coveting.

From $68-$1550, Marie Claire picks a wide range of prices and variety of clutches that they say link downtown edge with uptown glamour: At the end of long and short hardware straps, textured clutches swing with flair. Choices include some Purse Blog favorites, including Anya Hindmarch, Tory Burch, and Derek Lam.
We are totally crushing hard on Alexander McQueen. The new line of bags has our attention and has us desperately seeking an extra allowance to splurge on a range of his designs. The most talked about bags from McQueen this fall is his “Faithful” line. We have already seen the Alexander McQueen Faithful Glove Clutch, the Faithful Bucket Tote, and the Faithful Leather Tote. Each of these handbags continues to be reinvented with new colors and patterns that has using the eni meni mini mo technique to choose our favorite.

We already brought you the black and brown leather versions of the Faithful Glove Clutch and today we are bringing you the Alexander McQueen Faithful Glove Clutch with gunmetal pyramid studs. We know the stud trend is all over, but these studs are subdued, altering shape and size, while blending into the black leather magnificently. Totally digging the studs. Buy through Net A Porter for $1095.

As more designers break into the realm of handbags, the real contenders stand apart from the wannabes. Donna Karan is a well known label, but not in the world of handbags. Not only are a new batch of Donna Karan bags popping up, but they are grabbing our attention. Looking young, and hip, some of her fall bags feature an array of zippers. Zippers are the new rage, which you will see more of on shoes, bags, and clothing.

I am excited about the Donna Karan Zipped Clutch which brings the perfect bit of punk and rock to a black clutch. Who really wants to carry a plain black clutch these days? Possibilities are endless and while everyone is doing the stud trend I am all for the zipper trend. Must have more zippers.

There have only been a handful of times we have reviewed Donna Karan on PurseBlog and many were, well, not positive. But after Amanda reviewed the Donna Karan Pleated Tote, I found a new love and appreciation of Donna Karan. Whoever is head of accessory design there, needs to stay put. The zipped clutch features all over silver tone zip embellishments on black leather along with visible stitching. The clutch calls to me. No need to be bland with black, be bold with black. New handbag designer love of the day goes to Donna Karan. Buy through Net A Porter for $895.

We come to expect a certain look with our clutches. Small, rectangular, hand-held. There of course are the exotic clutches, the bedazzled clutches, the boring clutches, and the amazing clutches. It is when a designer thinks outside of the box that they captivate and capture their audience.

Jil Sander is much of a no-name when it comes to Purse Blog, though she is an internationally renowned minimalist German fashion designer. Her designs are impeccably clean with an attention to lines and shapes. My only qualm is remembering she is Jil with one ‘l’ not two.

As much as I adored the Marni Geometric Clutch, I have found a true appreciation of the geometric cutout Jil Sander Polished Leather Clutch. Entirely linear, everything about this clutch is edgy, clean, and discreet. While the orange polished-leather body seems minimalistic, it is the lines that gives this clutch the perfect oomph.

No need to stick to muted browns for fall, spruce up your wardrobe with a pop of bright orange color. Buy through Net A Porter for $590.

Simply put, I love this clutch. Marni has a way of bringing together clean lines with contrasting colors and just making it work. Everything about the Marni Geometric Leather Clutch works for me. From the white calf-leather with contrast black piping, to the slightly ruched body, to the simplicity of the gold-tone hardware with twist lock closure, all aspects of this clutch combine to get the job done. It feels entirely clean. Looking at this clutch reminds me of walking into a completely white walls and floor modern space, which is accented perfectly and everything is in place. Simple and hassle-free. Looking at this clutch nearly gives me a clear mind. And that is a feat in and of itself. Absolutely love it. No other way to put it.

Oh, I just love this color of silver. Dark enough to not look cheap and to go with basically everything you own, no matter what. Seriously – try and think of a color that this wouldn’t go with. I defy you! Another thing that I love about the Jimmy Choo Chandra Metallic Clutch is that the leather still looks obviously soft, and so many metallic bags screw that up entirely. In an effort to make things shiny, they make them stiff, and suddenly the bag doesn’t look expensive anymore. This bag still looks pliable and luxurious while having a great gleam to its finish, and that’s a tone that so many designers try to strike and fail miserably.

The main event on this clutch is obviously the banded metal closure, though, and I absolutely love it. The off-center placement is perfect, as is the decision to use two different colors of silver in order to set it apart from the finish of the clutch. In fact, I love it so much that I kind of wish I could slide it off and use it as a bracelet…or that it could be bought separately as a bracelet…are the Choo people listening? Have they considered a jewelry line? Buy through Net-a-Porter for $1495.

Entirely unique, I will give this bag that much. And maybe that is what Emilio Pucci is going for. Why bring one more predictable clutch into the handbag world when you can bring an eclectic one to the bunch? The Emilio Pucci Bean Shaped Clutch truly is shaped like a bean and finished in a navy metallic shine. The body is a hard box clutch with a silver tone frame and push clasp opening. I would have to see this ‘bean’ in person to know exactly what would fit inside of it. This is a conversation piece. One of those funky bags you see someone carrying where you try not to stare but you continue to stare wondering what exactly it is and who created it. This is Emilio Pucci, it stays fun but strays away from his signature prints. The price tag is hefty and this is a clutch that I will be content to leave out of my collection. Though, I will admit, it did grab my attention. Buy through Net A Porter for $1385.
