In Raf Simons’ relatively short time at the helm of Christian Dior, the brand’s handbags have been resurgent; where Simons’ predecessor, John Galliano, was happy to adorn and re-adorn Dior’s classic shapes toward the end of his tenure, Simons has gone about reinventing them with new details, introducing a handful of completely new lines in the process. For Spring 2015, the brand’s accessories staff is turning its attention to shoulder bags.
Currently, Dior’s most well-loved bags are totes or satchels, with the exception of the Miss Dior, which has yet to get Raf’s makeover to the extent that the others have. Instead of gussying it up for spring, Dior launched several new shoulder bags, all with half-leather, half-metal chains that double over themselves to allow for short shoulder carry, much like the Chanel Boy Bag. In fact, these bags seem very much inspired by the Boy, at least in overall structure.
Dior designs to the Boy’s shape trend without aping its aesthetic too hard, though. Instead of the tough, young vibe that the popular Chanel bag gives off, Dior’s have the same air of ladylike futurism that permeates everything the label has done under Simons, with brand-specific notes, like the dangling letter hardware and a reimagined cannage stitching, intact.
