Buzz Worthy: Vogue Dubs Sacai’s First Line of Handbags a Sure Hit

Although Vogue has a questionable history when it comes to predicting It Bags (the publication tends to be far too generous with the label and far too willing to give it to weird, editorial-centric designs that no one would ever expect to catch on with consumers in a major way), it’s always worth taking a look at what America’s fashion Bible thinks might perform well. Reading handbag tea leaves is not an exact science for anyone, after all, and Vogue at least has the advantage of seeing all the best of the best when it comes to global fashion. Yesterday, the magazine’s site gave cult brand Sacai’s first-ever handbag line a glowing review, and we can sort of see why.

For the uninitiated, Sacai was started in 1999 by Chitose Abe and has slowly but surely built a rabid following in the 17 years since. Abe’s clothes are inventive and wearable, with athletic touches that presaged the current clamor for sneakers and athleisure. Spring 2017 marks the brand’s tentative exploration of accessories with five designs that run the gamut from mini bags to carry-ons, and the results are in keeping with Sacai’s casual, hybrid futurism.

You can check out all of the five designs below, which were designed in collaboration with Marc by Marc Jacobs handbag veteran Kate Hillier, but my favorite of the bunch is the leather and canvas oversized tote, which is a perfectly luxurious take on your standard bicolor canvas L.L. Bean carryall. It’s a bag I’d definitely buy and use regularly, if the price were right. The rest are attractive options, but they don’t feel as confidently designed as the tote. The bags will arrive at Bergdorf Goodman later this month, according to Vogue, at which point we’ll have price information.

Check out the five bags below and let us know if you think they’ll be the big hits Vogue assures us they are.
