Mother’s Day is this Sunday, and although family-oriented holidays can be tricky (if not downright disastrous) for lots of people, everyone probably has one or two fictional, televised mothers for whom they have plenty of unfussy affection. That’s no less true for people with strong maternal relationships in real life; entertainment and the stories it tells can have profound effects on our ideas about what it means to be a mom and to love your own.
Like we did last year for the holiday, we’ve compiled a list of 10 iconic showbiz mamas and paired them with the bags we think they deserve. (We feel most comfortable expressing our affection in bags. Just go with it!)
Sophia Petrillo, Golden Girls
Eric Javits Leila Tote
$495 via Neiman Marcus
Sophia famously carried a top-handled straw bag on Golden Girls, and this Eric Javits version would be the perfect Mother’s Day upgrade.
Rainbow Johnson, Black-ish
Jerome Dreyfuss Nestor Saddle Bag
$850 via Net-a-Porter
Rainbow dresses like she’s a buyer for Anthropologie–feminine, with occasional hippie tendencies. She likes print and not-too-bright colors, so this suede saddle bag would mesh perfectly with her style.
Nancy Botwin, Weeds
Coach Rogue Bag
$795 via Coach
Nancy has a slightly boho California thing going on with her personal style, which this bag fits with perfectly. It also has plenty of organizational pockets for her, uh, wares.
Marie Barone, Everybody Loves Raymond
Nancy Gonzalez Lotus Wallis Lady Bag
$4,250 via Neiman Marcus
Marie probably wouldn’t approve of a bag this expensive, but if she won the lottery, she might find it within herself to get this appropriately ladylike bag to go with one of her floral shirts.
Lucy Ricardo, I Love Lucy
Marc Cross Hadley Baby Bag
$1,995 via Saks
This little butter-colored satchel would match perfectly with the full-skirted, tea-length dresses Lucy wore so often.
Lois Griffin, Family Guy
JumpFromPaper Checked Handbag
$90 via Shopbop
Cartoon bag for a cartoon mom.
Lily Munster, The Munsters
Alexander McQueen Star Satchel
$2,895 via Saks
For the luxury goth, only McQueen will do.
Gloria Delgado-Pritchett, Modern Family
Hermès Birkin
$23,194 via farfetch.com
If you’re going to marry rich, go all the way, you know?
Cookie Lyon, Empire
Christian Louboutin Paloma Tote
$2,150 via Neiman Marcus
Cookie didn’t claw her way to the top so that people would be able to overlook her, that’s for sure.
Betty Rubble, The Flintstones
Rafe Cubique Minaudiere
$910 via Anthropologie
This clutch not only matches Betty’s never-changing outfit, but it’s made of natural materials like wood and mother of pearl, which is perfect for this prehistoric mama.
