Alexander Wang

Alexander Wang goes bland with the Trudy Tote

“That’d be swell Trudy”. Name that TV show! If right off the bat you knew it is a line Pete Campbell has often told his wife Trudy Campbell on AMC’s hit series Mad Men, then you would be correct. I have a hard time thinking of anything other than Mad Men when I hear the name Trudy. Trudy plays the perfectly-put-together striving-to-climb-her-way-up housewife on the series. The handbags during that era were much more compact, structured, and ladylike. In fact, they are what designers are dabbling with more today.

The Alexander Wang Trudy Tote not only does not match with what I could expect Trudy Campbell to carry but also is a much more bland accessory for the brand.

We have all come to expect studs and a little bit of grunge when it comes to Alexander Wang. The designer has never strayed from his funky aesthetic but this bag is an unexpected letdown. It isn’t that the design itself is flawed, it is that the design is lacking any oomph. And Alexander Wang typically brings oomph.

I don’t doubt that the burnt sand hued leather is thick and durable. The bag has double zip trim, which is just about the only aspect that helps it stand out at all. There are double top handles along with a detachable adjustable leather shoulder strap. This bag is playing it safe. I go to other brands for safe, I turn to Alexander Wang for edginess. This bag is just lacking it. Buy via Net-A-Porter for $875.
